Mortal Kombat (also known as Mortal Kombat 9) is a 2D fighting game with 3D graphics (2.5D) and is the ninth installment in the Mortal Kombat series. Developed by NetherRealm Studios (formerly known as Midway Games) and published exclusively under theWarner Bros. Interactive Entertainment label. The game was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 systems on April 19, 2011 in North America, and on April 21 in Europe
.Mortal Kombat was officially announced on June 10, 2010 accompanied with a debut trailer showcasing the new presentation and gameplay features, which includes Challenges, and extras such as an on-line mode, four player tag-team play, and downloadable content. Although the game won several awards at E3 2010, and received positive reviews, it is currently banned in Australia due to the extreme violence.

Although set directly after Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the game focuses on the earliest period in the Mortal Kombat series (the trilogyMortal KombatMortal Kombat II, and Mortal Kombat 3).

Mortal Kombat combines its new mature-oriented fighter gameplay with its story mode, refined graphics, improved game technology, and new game modes to create an experience that is different from what previous Mortal Kombat games offered. Some feature details include four-player tag-team kombat, 3D TV compatibility, fatalities presented in graphic detail, enhanced online functionality, and a storyline that has players jumping back to the past. After centuries of Mortal Kombat, Emperor Shao Kahn has finally defeated Raiden and his allies. Faced with extinction, Raiden has one last chance. To undo the emperor's victory, he must strike Shao Kahn where he is vulnerable, the past. 

Mortal Kombat will be playable on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
